Fifth Annual Benefit Dinner for Women in Choco

Lugar: Davis Community Church

This year’s theme is “Mexico y Colombia, Países Hermanos”. We want to honor our brothers and sisters from Mexico who have supported us from the beginning.

On June 10, 2011, Juan Manuel Santos, the president of Colombia, endorsed a law which outlines a program of services, assistance, and reparations for the estimated four million people forcibly displaced by the internal armed conflict in Colombia since 1985 thereby officially acknowledging the responsibility of the Colombian government to rectify this enormous injustice. How fortunate we feel to have recognized this problem many years ago and to have taken concrete and effective steps to respond to it. Through our fifth benefit dinner we are providing you with a unique opportunity to celebrate our achievements while continuing to help these displaced women from Chocó rebuild a dignified life for themselves and their children.

Four years ago Funbichocó’s Bank for Forcibly Displaced Women was initiated with the funds collected from the First Annual Benefit Dinner for the displaced women of Chocó. The number of women in Chocó who have started or expanded their businesses with loans managed by Funchichocó has grown over the years. This year we want to spread this initiative by sharing our experience with women in other regions plagued by the scourge of massive forced displacement and offer them a solid reason to dream of a better life and a healthier community. Please join us in this endeavor.

We invite you to accompany us for an enjoyable dinner-dance. A typical Mexican dish and a special Colombian dessert will delight your palates.  The Jarocha music of the Grupo Semilla and Son del Centro and the popular Colombian music of Los Primos will motivate you to move your bodies. Shoes appropriate for dancing are highly recommended. A donation of $40 is kindly requested.
